Sandvik’s Hunter Valley Site

“Thanks to Projectplace, we have been able to achieve all primary objectives to have all stakeholders completely up to date at all times across the project timeline.”
Johan Malmberg, Senior Project Manager, Sandvik Mining Australia

Sandvik Mining is a business area within the Sandvik Group and a leading global supplier of equipment, cemented-carbide tools, service and technical solutions for the excavation and sizing of rock and minerals in the mining industries. Annual sales 2010 amounted to about SEK 35,200 M, with approximately 15,500 employees.

Problem

In late 2010, Sandvik Mining commenced construction of a major industrial facility at Hunter Valley to accommodate their mining business for Eastern Australia. The facility involved acquisition of 16 hectares of green fields land and the construction of over 27,000 square metres of workshops, workforce amenities, a gymnasium as well as an administration building for around 180 office staff. The major capital investment project included two major phases: construction of the facility and integration of six business units operating across the Newcastle region.

Solution

Over the construction phase of the project more than 1,300 people were inducted onsite. A fundamental requirement for managing a project of this magnitude is the ability to accurately and efficiently share detailed drawings, plans and other critical documents with full version control. Sandvik’s existing infrastructure did not allow for integration with external parties due to security concerns, which made it impossible to connect with key stakeholders such as engineers, architects and building contractors.

Projectplace, a web-based social project management solution, provided Sandvik with a common forum on the internet where all internal and external stakeholder groups could coordinate and share important documents in a secure way. It was easy for project team members to invite stakeholders to Projectplace and keep them continuously up to date.
